Song Meaning: Everlong by Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters is the rock n' roll band that rose from the ashes of Nirvana. Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana, determined to continue with his own music after the extinction of Nirvanamania.

"Everlong" is the second single released from Foo Fighters' second album The Colour and the Shape, released in 1997.

As it's often the case with songs that have loosely written lyrics, interpretations of the song-meaning can be pretty broad. So, when analyzing this song, I'll put forth my own interpretation of it, and it may differ from what others think of it. I'm also not saying my lyrical interpretation is the most accurate. In other words, there's no right or wrong way of looking at this song, except for the fact that some analysis are more accurate than others.

Having said that, I believe this song is about one thing and one thing only: drugs. There's few words in the lyrics emphasize backs up in my interpretation.
Analysis of lyrics:

First verse is a personification of the drugs, stating that the singer has been waiting to do drugs for a long time.

Second verse is about the consumption of drugs, as stated by "waste away with me." Most rock n' rollers believe they need to be high in order to write good music. That's exactly what's says in "I'm over my head / Out of her head she sang." When you are high, the lyrics just write themselves.

Third verse gives the listener some clues as to what the type of drug that's discussed in the lyrics. "Breathe out
So I can breathe you in" suggests that it's probably cocaine, for it definitely cannot be heroin.

Chorus states the good feeling one would feel as a result of doing drugs. being high helps you write and sing songs, as written in "When I sing along with you." Dave too probably wrote this song when was high.

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight
I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head she sang

Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me
Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when she sang

Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when she sang

  1. Sorry, but the song has nothing to do with drugs. Dave himself has explained that it is about falling in love and feeling so connected that even singing together you harmonize. This would seem to be the obvious meaning, but folks seem to always find a way to insert some subtle drug messaging into their interpretations. It's also not about Kurt Cobain, which seems to be the other thing people fall back on for every Dave song.
