Bruce Springsteen or Guns N' Roses?
That's the question.
Guns N' Roses stormed into rock n' roll scene with the release of their debut album, "Appetite for Destruction" in 1987. Bruce Springsteen, on the other hand, had a much more slow progress to the pinnacle of his career. In fact, he struggled at the beginning; it was the album "Bron to Run" that gave him some strong footing on the rock radio.
Just by the virtue of the fact that all credible critics agree that "Appetite for Destruction" is the best album since the release of "Led Zeppelin IV" makes Gun N' Roses' debut better than any Bruce Springsteen album released in the 70s or 80s.
Let's look at some of Springsteen's work in 1970s and 1980s. "Born to Run," "The River," "Nebraska," and "Born in the USA" stands out, among few other albums that I didn't include here. All these albums have classic hits, and some are staples on the rock and pop radio. However, these singles cannot be attributed for reincarnating the fading rock n' roll music. Guns N' Roses did just that with the popularity of "Appetite for Destruction." That album, as well as singles like "Paradise City," "Welcome to the Jungle," and "Sweet Child O' Mine." were much more influential than, say, "Born in the USA."
Nevertheless, why don't we know much about Guns N' Roses today, but Bruce Springsteen is the immortal that kids used to listen to the 1980s, and still do as adults. His four-hour-long live shows are simply breathtaking. Bruce was, in fact, recently named as the best live musician by Rolling Stone. With all due respect to GNR, their live shows suck!!!! The band crashed and burnt when Slash left in 1996 - making GNR almost a one hit wonder. It's true they released the Illusion albums in the 1990s following their debut classic, but many of the classic were written in the 1980s. GNR is the best of the 1980s, everybody remember them by a just one album.
The best indicator of one's true greatness is the ability to withstand the test of time. Due to that mere fact, Bruce Springsteen overwhelmingly triumphs Guns N' Roses as the better of the two. There's you go, I said it. I hope now we've settled this debate, the rock n' roll world can sleep a little bit better.
