Song Meaning, Background and Analysis: Welcome to Paradise by Green Day

Welcome to Paradise is about Billie Joel Armstrong's memoir his mom after leaving her home for the first time to live own his own. According to Wikipedia (it's a got nice article on this song; you should read it as well) Billie went onto live with his fellow bandmates, as well as a bunch of other slackers.

Song Meaning: Basket Case by Green Day

All I know about Basket Case is that this can be attributed to bringing punk rock into the 90s. That's I all I can make of it. However I'll say this: basket case usually means someone being an outcast because he's, you know, not cool. So I think that's what this song is about - it's about an uncool kid on the block.

Lyrics:

Do you have the time
To listen to me whine
About nothing and everything
All at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Am I just stoned?

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex
That's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause
It's bringing her down

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Uh, yuh, yuh, ya

Grasping to control
So I better hold on

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Am I just stoned?

Song Meaning: Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day

ARTIST: GREEN DAY | ALBUM: American idiot | RELEASED: 2004
"Who/what is Jesus of Suburbia?" This was what I wondered when I was listening to the song. After some Googling, I determined it was a character that front-man Billy Joe Armstrong created. So what does "Jesus of Suburbia" mean?

Song Meaning & Analysis: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day

ARTIST: GREEN DAY | ALBUM: American idiot | RELEASED: 2004
Heartfelt song from heavy-hitting American Idiot album showcases some of Billy Joe Armstrong's best writings. Coinciding with recurring themes of the album, such as anti-establishment, anti-war, and exposure of biased media of the US, "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" sings about a person's adversity as a consequence of thereof.

Song Meaning & Analysis: Holiday by Green Day

Green Day's third single from American Idiot came in the middle of Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The theme of "Holiday," and that of the album as well, perfectly coincide with the antiwar movement started in the US. The also marked Green Day's return to their original punk rock roots.

The first verse of the song describes the neglected veterans retuning home for war6. It's well known that, although US spends nearly half of it's budget on military, little care is given for veterans.

"Faith and Misery"9 of the second verse refers to the fact George Bush was a bible thumper - he's christian but not christian-like. Even to this day, the Republican party of the US likes to comes across as religious to pander to the church goers, and get votes, but are completely neglecting the fact that Jesus would've opposed blindly invading countries. I'm not 100% sure of my explanation here, so correct me if you think I'm wrong.

Song Meaning & Facts: American Idiot by Green Day

American Idiot made Green Day relevant again! The title track of the album brought them back to the mainstream radio. They weren't afraid to explore their old-school punk rock roots when it wasn't the hip music in 2004. However due its massive appeal in the pop and rock radio alike, the album was a massive commercial success, selling in excess of 15 million copies worldwide. The song was recognized as one of the best 500 songs ever by the Rolling Stone magazine in 2009.

American Idiot is a anti-establishment song that outlines most of the things wrong with the US: guns, racism, bigotry, sexism, general stupidity, and, of course, wars. In fact, the album was released following the year of Iraq War, and months before the 2004 US presidential election. Nevertheless the album did not manage to prevent Pres. Bush from reelecting back to the White House.
