James Hetfield supposedly wrote the song when he was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time, whom he didn't get see often because James is usually on the road touring with the band. Since the lyrics didn't reflect typical Metallica materials, such as death, demons and drugs, he kept the song to himself. But it was included on the album, nonetheless, upon the insistence of the producer Bob Rock.
With an interview with MTV, James has said the song is about "brotherly love." So he smartly deviates from romantic love, which is what he should've said because that's initial basis of the lyrics. Nevertheless, listener could interpret the song anyway he/she wishes.
The song was, in fact, very well received by rock n' roll fans. Accordingly it was a hit on rock and classic rock radio. But the song didn't sit well with hardcore metal fans. This was the beginning of the "sell-out" label that went on to attach with Metallica for years to come. Although they lost some metal fans, meaning they didn't show up for live concerts, the band managed to reach out to a new generation of headbangers who are still following the band. I'm part of that generation. I like the Black Album just as much as anything of the previous Metallica albums, because I'm not a hardcore 80's metal person; I'm just a rock n' roll person. However I'll just say that my favorite Metallica album is Ride the Lightening, and favorite song is a tossup between "Ride the Lightening" ( title track ) and "That Was Just Your Life."
- So close no matter how far
- Couldn't be much more from the heart
- Forever trusting who we are
- And nothing else matters
- Never opened myself this way
- Life is ours, we live it our way
- All these words I don't just say
- And nothing else matters
- Trust I seek and I find in you
- Every day for us something new
- Open mind for a different view
- And nothing else matters
- Never cared for what they do
- Never cared for what they know
- But I know
- So close no matter how far
- Couldn't be much more from the heart
- Forever trusting who we are
- And nothing else matters
- Never cared for what they do
- Never cared for what they know
- But I know
- Never opened myself this way
- Life is ours, we live it our way
- All these words I don't just say
- And nothing else matters
- Trust I seek and I find in you
- Every day for us something new
- Open mind for a different view
- And nothing else matters
- Never cared for what they say
- Never cared for games they play
- Never cared for what they do
- Never cared for what they know
- And I know
- So close no matter how far
- Couldn't be much more from the heart
- Forever trusting who we are
- No nothing else matters
